Emma Bennett
Emma Bennett is known for her sumptuous paintings that set figurative elements familiar to traditional still life painting, such as flowers, fruit and game in combination with imagery derived from film and photography including, for example, fire, water, and interior objects such as beds, lamps, tabletops and mirrors. These potentially incongruous figurative elements are united within Bennett’s compositions and are set against monochromatic black grounds.
She explores themes such as gravity, time and transience, and the fleeting nature of existence, experience and encounters. Her resonant paintings refer to the incomplete, fragmented nature of memory and thought.
Emma Bennett (b.1974) grew up in Wales before attending Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art in London, where she now lives and works. Bennett is included in ‘100 Painters of Tomorrow’ and ‘Nature Morte’, both published by Thames & Hudson, and ‘The Book of Black’ published by Laurence King.
She has exhibited globally in galleries and museums and is represented by CHARLIE SMITH London. Bennett’s work is also represented in prominent private collections in Australia, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.
